Survivor Talk Sundays: Barbara Cohen

Every survivor’s story is unique and provides a special, first-hand account of life before, during, and after the Holocaust. Hearing from local Michigan survivors helps us see all the victims of the Holocaust as real people who had–and lost–family, friends, and communities. Please join us on Sundays to listen to a survivor speaker.
Barbara Cohen
Barbara (Schechter) Cohen was born in Bukaczowce, Poland (now part of Ukraine) in 1941. When Barbara was a baby, she and her parents were sent to live in a ghetto. They were able to escape with false papers and were hidden by a non-Jewish farmer in the area. Because she had blond hair and blue eyes, Barbara’s mother was able to pass as German and took Barbara to Germany where they stayed during the war. They ended up in a Displaced Persons Camp in Stuttgart, where they were reunited with Barbara’s father. The family arrived in New York in 1946 as refugees.

“Letters from Brno” Film Screening with Producer Karen Kruger
Letters From Brno, an award winning documentary, tells a powerful personal story of parental love and sacrifice during the Holocaust. In a 45 year search for clues to her mother’s past, Karen Kruger uncovers the tragic fate of her grandparents from the eyewitness accounts of their letters written during the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia. A conversation with the film producer Karen Kruger will follow the screening. Refreshments will be served. Film runtime: 66 minutes.
Educator Workshop: Foundations of the Holocaust
An introductory course into teaching the Holocaust created by Echoes and Reflections and hosted by The Zekelman Holocaust Center. This virtual session examines how teachers can use all of the resources of Echoes and Reflections and USC Shoah Foundation’s iWitness to teach the Holocaust, connect learning to current events, encourage inquiry-based learning, and foster empathy. Educators will receive 2 SCECH hours and all educational materials from the session.
Educator Workshop: Next Generation Speaker Talk With Susan Feber
Hear from Susan Feber, a child of a Holocaust Survivor. The Next Generation Speaker Series will be a monthly, virtual opportunity for educators to hear from a child or grandchild of a Holocaust survivor. In their talks, these incredible Next Generation Speakers share stories of their family during the Holocaust and what it was like to grow up with a loved one who has gone through that experience.
Educator Workshop: Americans and the Holocaust Exhibition
Join The HC’s education team at the Warren Civic Center Library for a unique educator workshop centered on “Americans and the Holocaust,” a traveling exhibit developed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Educators in attendance will receive 1.5 SCECH hours and all educational materials used. This exhibit examines how Americans responded to the rise of Nazism, the refugee crisis, and the Holocaust. Remembrance of Things Present
The story of the Holocaust continues far past liberation.
